Carl Levy (as suggested by Andy on F/B) is a possibility. Coincidentally, I was only listening to 'Check Out Yourself' last week, so perhaps something is resonating with me (or 'p'raps it's a false dawn!).

I'll need to go listen to some Jackie P.

It was Pete who suggested Carl Levy.

Although it's something I've read umpteeen times over the years, re-reading the Black Music piece on UK Reggae artists from 1976 posted up on Pama last week I see it suggests that this is Gene Rondo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Jdzs3iAJCI

It says that Gene recorded 'Got To Be Mellow' for R&B Discs, and Domain was one of the King's labels. This isn't a bad version but Barry Biggs does it better in Reggae style from a couple of years later.

Sounds very feasible.

I agree. Gene Rondo could really sing. A shame he wasn't/isn't better known.

I'm surprised to find this, on YT:

Listening to his delivery on this, I can Jason Simms being Gene, in reality...... Smile

I probably know this, but who were The Aggressors?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4gH11Rlxxc

This track seems to follow the 'Return Of Django' template.

I'd even stretch to the musicians in Locomotive:

And presumably the same lot who did the 'Reggae Steady Go' album on Marble Arch with the Skinhead sleeve?

Could they have been the Mopeds, who did 'Whisky and Soda' originally?

Not really had time to listen/research this one.

Good point. Here's the Mopeds:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzX0NWaqn1M

Here's the Aggressors:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXPXzlDBEto

Sounds by both "bands", sound the same, or close, at the least. There's some information about the Mopeds in an old CD I have, from Lagoon. Laurel Aitken used the Mopeds on quite a few of his mid-60's offerings. I don't have the CD to hand, but I think they were a studio group, made up, of uni students, or summat.

Now, I've read that some think the Aggressors were nothing more, than a bunch of session players, as well. So the Mopeds, could also be the Aggressors.

In fact, the Liquidators LP "Super Reggae", is essentially the Aggressors LP, with a few alterations, to be aimed at a US audience!

https://www.discogs.com/Liquidators-Super-Reggae/release/5467552

FWIW, there was a UK group/band called the Invaders, whose sound, is quite similar, as well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knLUJhPVEpc

Here's that Lagoon CD:

https://www.discogs.com/Various-The-History-Of-Ska-Blue-Beat-Reggae-Vol1/release/6760251

IIRC, I think most of the bands on this set, sounded similar. It's been ages since I last gave it a rinse, though....

There's also a volume 2, out there:

Excellent research there Sethster Smile I'd not been aware of that Liquidators album (and so the more recent Liquidators weren't the first then!).

"Mac Reefer" sounds like a made up name if ever there was one.

Ta, Marc! That Liquidators LP, is sold rather cheaply, online, as I've never seen a copy, at a store over here, in the US. I reckon, if I were to see one, it'd be in a major city, like NYC, or LA.

As for the modern Liquidators, aye, they aren't the first. Though, I'll wager, they aren't even aware, of the other! Laughing

IIRC, I think members of the Pyramids would be able to shed some light, on this subject. Roy Ellis, has been regaling us, with stories about groups/bands such as these, for a few years now.

I think Monty would also be a fountain of knowledge.

But, from what I remember thanks to those Lagoon/Esoldun sets, lots of the music, was played by a few bands, using a different name, on one label, then flogged as by a different band, on a different label.

Most of the players were essentially starving, so flogging your tapes to as many people, as possible, was thought to increase your chances of making, as much money as possible.

It's been ages since I delved into this topic, so I can't give specific's, just an abstract.....All of the websites addresses, went kaput, when my PC crashed 2 years ago.....Embarrassed

The voice(s) isn't familiar at all.

The song (NOBODY'S BUSINESS or at least, it's based on it) is one of those oft-covered folk/mento tunes, I have 3 or 4 versions, here's the Gaylads' Ska update of it...
