I just ripped the compilation Cactus Classics Vol.2 (Creole, 2001) (CT 3021). As the dates werenít written in the booklet, I made a search on the internet. Thought of sharing the results. Two songs I werenít able to locate in time PUSH COME TO SHOVE (by Delroy Wilson) and WHENEVER THEREíS MOONLIGHT (recording No.2) by Jackie Edwards. So if anyone have info about the released year of these songsÖ

Money Never Build A Montain (The Tennors) 1973
Motherís And Fatherís Love (John Holt ) 1971
Island Music (Fil Calender) 1979
Call On Me (Delroy Wilson) 1971
Twelfth Of Never (Pat Kelly) 1968
Pick Up Your Telephone (Al Campbell) 1978
Stars (recording No.2)..... [aka: The Sun] (Cornell Campbell) 1975
One Fine Day..... [aka: Hooray] (Slim Smith) 1970
Somebodyís Baby (Pat Kelly) 1968
Born In Ethiopia (The In Crowd) 1977
Getting Cozy (The In Crowd) 1979
Midnight (Lloyd & Doreen) 1970
Push Come To Shove (Delroy Wilson) 197X (correction: circa 1986)
Tree In The Meadow (John Holt) 1972*
My Only Lover (Cornell Campbell) 1973
Love Of The Common People (Eric Donaldson) 1971
Donít Believe In Him (Gregory Isaacs) 1975
Peek-A-Boo (Errol Dunkley) 1980
Whenever Thereís Moonlight (recording 2) (Jackie Edwards) 197X
Sing A Little Song (Desmond Dekker) 1973

*45cat place the JA single TREE IN THE MEADOW in 1971. Discogs has 1972 and RKR place it in 1973.

I don't know volume 2 yet as I just ripped it, but volume 1 is such a great compilation. The song BABY MY LOVE (Phil Calendar feat. Jah Stitch) and WE PLAY REGGAE (The In Crowd) featured on that compilation are among the best reggae tracks that I've discovered this year.

Interested to know what the sound quality is like on these. Cactus CDs have a bit of a reputation.

Delroy Wilson - Push Comes To Shove:
This is a poor lick over of Freddie McGregors' massive hit, which I think was out around 1985, so dates from sometime around then.

Pretty much, Andy - 45cat lists Freddie's as 1986:

...but Delroy's version is not listed (I only have it on a Music Club CD and have it down as 1986)

I am a bit fussy when it comes to quality and I can tell you that the sound quality on Volume 1 was excellent. I don't have much CDs from the CREOLE/CACTUS label. From memory, the only other that I've got it's Barrington Levy and I think the sound quality wasn't good on all tracks.

For CACTUS CLASSICS Vol.1, apart from the fact that the artwork is really basic and the liner notes too, I would grate this as an excellent compilation. I happen to purchase it for one specific song and was blown away by the complete compilation.

Thanks Andy & Zapatoo. I knew there F McG song was in 1986, but as the liner notes of the CD mentioned songs from the late 60 to late 70's I didn't even consider this to be a cover of a song released in 1986. But after listening to the song, it sounds like mid-80s and it is a cover of the original issued in 1986.

Thanks MGR. I do know the audio quality on the Errol Dunkley set is pretty appalling and not to good on 'Revolution Dub' (where one can actually hear the record arm moving about). But as you say, 'Classics' has some superb tracks.

I see what you mean. On the double CD GOLD by Barrington Levy, which features the albums BOUNTY HUNTER and LIFE STYLE, the sound is very bad on two songs. On one of them it seams as two songs playing at the same time, like the tape is reading A-Side and B-Side at the same time. The two songs are SHINE EYE GIRL and SKYLARKING. Maybe the same problem occurred on the CD Bounty Hunter, also issued on Creole. The rest of the compilation, the sound is not perfect neither. I have these songs on the Auralux edition (Shaolin Temple), but I donít like the way the album sound on this CD neither. I think the mastering wasnít done properly. Too bad that the first Barrington Levy album wasnít released on CD with the quality it deserve. A project for the label Hot Milk or similar restoring abel hopefully Wink

I've got Bounty Hunter on Cactus CD, and I know that the same problem happens on Skylarking. Shine Eye Girl sounds a bit "crunchy." I agree, it really deserves a quality re-issue.

Tonight I've listen to the compilation with headphone and I have to admit, the sound of half of the songs ain't terrible. Too often a bit of static that doesn't even seems to come from a vinyl. I would have to listen to VOLUME 1 to see if it's the same case. THE VERDIC: that compilation would be interesting only if there is songs that are not available anywhere else on CD.

I'd be curious to compare to the same songs coming from other sources.
