I'm William, 40 years old.
First exposure to reggae was when I worked in a record shop in Ealing (West London). Only problem was all three of us could play whatever music we wanted and so I often had my Beres Hammond competing with the Michael Crawford stuff a female colleague liked to play.
Beres Hammond sums up my taste in Jamaican music. Nice smooth sound.

Hi William.... Welcome.

I couldn't have taken more than a few minutes of Michael Crawford before I started breaking things.... Rolling Eyes Surprised

My first question - does anyone know anything about the Q label, supposedly a Trojan subsidiary in the distant past.

What did you want to know?

I believe there are only four traced releases, all of which are UK recordings linked to Count Suckle, Freddie Notes & The Rudies.

Hi William,

Welcome!

Can never go wrong with Beres, can you? Even if the riddim isn't 'all that' the man's voice will certainly make up for it. What a sweet and soulful voice!

Was this before or after "Montego Bay"?

I don't know for sure, but I suspect earlier the same year. The four Q releases were issued in 1970 - Montego Bay was released in September 1970.

Welcome, William - I lived in W13 in the second half of the 70s and spent most of my childhood before that in Greenford - since lived in Southall, Northolt, Greenford (again), Hayes, Hillingdon and Chertsey since 1988.

Used to pop into Our Price in Ealing Broadway (near the long-gone 2 Pigeons pub) and remember buying Gregory's "Night Nurse" LP and the 10" in there on the same day as hearing the Valentine Brothers' MONEY'S TOO TIGHT TO MENTION playing over the sound system in the shop - a couple of years before Simply Red did (an admittedly not bad) a version.

Beres Hammond? His voice can sometimes grate on my ears, but I've found a good few tunes by him that I like Cool

Welcome William - glad you've joined us Smile

I have one Q label release (Freddie Notes' 'Please Don't Go'/'Bread On The Table'), and think there are two others on blank only. In terms of dating the label, the other release - Jimmy Lindsay's 'Tribute To Jimi Hendrix' - may help to date it to about October 1970 after his death. But its Reggae so who knows!

As for Beres, he's not really my cuppa. Give me Honey Boy anyday.

Am also on Pama Forum as gorgonwilliam (the site wouldn't accept plain "william") but haven't posted yet.
Zapatoo, I rather miss the bendy buses winding their way through W13 and W5.
Thanks for all the welcomes.
This might make Bosssounds' day
