The most fun I've had at a historical park, was a re-enactment of a battle between the Secessionist Army of Northern Virginia, and the Yankee Army of Virginia, in the rain....the point was to demonstrate how hard it was for soldiers back then, to effectively fight one another under those circumstances, since the powder would get wet....which, suited me fine.....I find any government willing to send an army into another nation, to force them to stay loyal to the "union", else they'll get shot, tyrannical at best....when all that needed to happen, was a sit down, and talk scenario. Wink

Otherwise, I'd rather go to historical places on a nice, sunny day....but, not always warm....in Virginia we have Colonial Williamsburg, and there's nothing better than a cold, blustery Autumn day there, drinking hot milled apple cider, with a warm ginger bread, as you walk along the cobbles, pretty leaves, everywhere....

Very Happy

In the Middle Ages, battles had to be arranged in advance (I don't know) - I hadn't thought of that, but I also never imagined there being armies marching aimlessly around the countryside, on the off chance they'd meet an army of the opposite side.

Indeed.....Happens in wars, even now....That's why I like going to those kinds of places, it helps me learn to be a better man, from the folly of others...Plus, history is so interesting, anyway! Cool

Of all the box sets Trojan released during this era, this one has to be the quintessential sampler of Rocksteady, Boss/Skinhead/Early/Original/Revive Reggae, and UK Reggae to come from the Trojan vaults. This box set, will most definitely appeal to the true fanatics of Reggae music, who understand the history, and progression of this music. This set will not readily appeal to casual listeners, or those that seem to only equate Reggae to everything that came after 1976, and was sponsored by major label record companies trying to comodify Reggae to a white middle class audience, used to LP's and Rock stars.

FWIW, Reggae was never meant to have stadia filling superstars, or single artist LP's like Rock had during this era. Reggae music is a much more intimate entity, with its music more suitable for 45's, or compilation LP's at best. And, AFAIC, the major labels took a good thing, and ruined it. But, not before they exploited the champions of the genre. This is why most folks can only equate Bob Marley with Reggae. He was able to juxtapose being a champion of all people, poor, middle class, or rich, all the while, filling the coffers of rich business men, with their expensive lifestyles, and who do little to nowt for the people Reggae music originally was geared towards....the poor.

Some people may declare some of the music here, is not "real Reggae", but I can't help but ask.....What is real Reggae? Is it the music that came before 1976? Is it the music that came before 1972, when Rasta lyrics primarily took over, and Reggae changed directions, in both musical, and lyrical content? Is it the music that has come after 1976?

It seems to me, that Reggae is more than just a musical genre, to be appreciated by a few people, but something that is supposed to appeal to all of us, no matter our background. To dismiss any sub-genre of Reggae, as a lesser form of "Reggae music", is to put the buggy before the horse, getting on the buggy, and expecting to go somewhere!

You don't have to like Rocksteady, Boss/Skinhead/Early/Original/Revive Reggae, and UK Reggae, but you should at least acknowledge they have helped get Reggae to where it got, for the major labels to start paying attention to it, instead of merely slagging it off as "garbage". To not do so, is to show one's inability to grasp the concepts sung about, from the earliest Ska tunes, to the Dancehall favourites of the early 80's, and onward!

That said, if you want to fill some gaps, or listen to some different approaches to Reggae, or are just curious, give this one a punt. I rate this as 5 out of 5 stars, and think it's essential listening for any Reggae fanatic, that truly loves the genre, and takes the good with the bad, and accepts it's history! However, if you simply want to hear about the wonders of weed, or Jah Rastafari, and can't wrap your gulliver around anything, but that sort of content....steer clear, folks! Steer clear! This set delves much deeper, than what your shallow mind, can comprehend! Razz

I will admit disc 3 is the weakest of the lot, as a goodly amount of the tracks are from when Trojan was attempting to crossover to Pop fans, namely the white middle class market, which is ironic, because a few years earlier, Trojan had already done so, thanks to the Skinheads, and Suedeheads! Even more ironic, is that, after this scheme caused Trojan to go tits up, folks like Island, & Virgin Records were able to help Reggae cross over to a wider market, and actually make a profit, enabling them to grow even further, than they already had up to that point! Laughing

I wasn't even rude to this "Jim Francis" - merely critical of his laziness in reviewing something he doesn't appear to know aught about and hasn't bothered to research.

I had two comments deleted....So much for freedom of speech, and having a different opinion than other people, and expressing it.... Mad

Haunted House: The Skinhead Sevens Box Set

The Upsetters 'Double Wheel'

Single Three

The Corporation 'Walking Through Jerusalem'

Single Four

Single Five

Single Six

The Music Doctors 'Going Strong'

Single Seven
The Cimarons 'Grandfather Clock'
The Cimarons 'Kick Me Or I'll Kick You'

Single Eight
Sir Lord Comic & The Upsetters 'Django Shoots First'
The Mellotones 'Uncle Desomond'

This is a boxset of 8 7"'s of the most in demand tracks from the 'Skinhead' era.

A wonderful compendium of some top sounds, which are Skinhead friendly. Vinyl is of good quality, and thickness, so the sound is top notch!

Musically speaking, you get 14 tracks, of varying styles of the Reggae sound preferred by Skinheads. Some tunes come from JA, some from the UK, some come from JA, and are over-dubbed in the UK....But, all in all, you won't be unhappy giving this a punt.

However, there are a few duff numbers...."Skinhead, A Message To You", is dreadful, "Kick Me, or I'll Kick You", is less than inspiring, and, "Uncle Desmond" is a good tune, but I've never gotten anyone to dance to it.... Rolling Eyes

You do get some scorchers, and there are plenty of them....singles 1, 2, 4, & 5 are all double sided boss sounders, with single 3 being a darn good double sider, but, it's not scorching.... Wink

The box set comes with a booklet, filled with lovely photos, plenty of information about the era, and label scans. Label scans are also featured on the bottom of the box set, too...Liner notes are done by Michael De Koningh.....

A solid 4.5 out of 5 stars. Essential listening for those into Skinhead friendly Reggae music, or those simply curious about this thing called "Skinhead Reggae".... Wink Cool

Producer : Lloyd Charmers

Simply one of the best compilations of Boss Reggae. After one listen, you will fully understand why Lloyd Charmers is regarded so highly by Skinheads, and Reggae fans alike.

Sound quality is crystal clear, and the music is the choppy, syncopated sound that made the Hippy Boys a highly sought after backing band. These lads later became even more famous as Lee Perry's Upsetters.....And, members later formed the core of the band that took Bob Marley to pop stardom.

Liner notes are expertly done by a true champion of Reggae music, Charlie Reggae(RIP)....The notes come in booklet form, and feature a discography for Lloyd Charmers, and the Hippy Boys, complete with extra information about certain tunes....Charlie Reggae spared no expense, in terms of the giving of helpful information, with releases he was a part of....

Also, none of the tunes feature vocals, except for some banter prior to the music starting. All of the tunes, are instrumentals.....Some folks, I've discovered, have a problem with instro's for some strange reason, or another.....
Rolling Eyes

I give this release, 5 out of 5 stars, and declare it essential listening. You get just about everything you could possibly ask for, in a set of instrumental Skinhead Reggae.....the only thing else you could possibly want, is more, please!

One to give a punt, if you haven't already! Cool Cool
