Thanks Jason
Yes, I'd heard last night, but was waiting for it to be made more generally known:
Mike Atherton on FB wrote: | I'm posting this in affectionate memory of Michael de Koningh, reggae authority, record dealer, journalist, author and bloody good friend, who passed away on Thursday unexpectedly after a short illness. Bob Andy was one of his favourite artists - I still recall how thrilled Michael was when he met the great man a few years ago. This title is, sadly, appropriate - though Michael never had much good to say about rocksteady, so I'm not sure what he'd think of it. Rest in peace, Mr. Door Peeper.

It's very, very sad and shocking news.
I never met the man, but spoke to him a few times on the phone and usually bought 2 or 3 tunes from his always absorbing list...and when I happened to mention on a forum that I'd given away my copy of the "Double Barrel" LP, lo and behold, Michael sent me a copy a few days later.
The world (and the UK Reggae world) is a poorer place without him....

"Young, Gifted & Black" - useful, informative, enjoyable, essential.
Compilations, e.g. "Dancehall '69" and "Haunted House 7 inch vinyl", well-chosen and essential.
...and comments (whether spoken or in forums), always worthwhile and sometimes downright amusing or funny - "Dancehall jabbering" was a term coined by Mike and regarding BALLISTIC AFFAIR "complete with Owen's leaden rendition" _________________ Play it nice and cool, son. Like several who have posted over the web, I never knew the gentleman personally but feel compelled to share my sympathy.
Rest easy sir.

Saw Athers' post on Pama late last night and am absolutely gutted and completely shocked by this news.
I started buying from Mike's lists in the early `90s when he lived in Tonbridge, and when I called to reserve tunes we'd often end up having long chats about music over the phone. I always recall a panicked call around 1996 where I was seeking his help on wiring my speakers - he sorted me out, no problem. Nothing was too much trouble.
We started to have a lot more to do with each other while Y,G&B was being put together and then I finally met him sometime around Spring 2003 on the South Bank, together with Mike Atherton, to discuss what would eventually become the concept for the Tighten Up! book. Me, Mike and his wife Cathy did an interview with Miss P at Radio London just after it came out - a memorable experience of live radio, and we all had a celebratory drink afterwards (although Mike never touched alcohol or caffeine and was extremely health conscious in general).
I went down to his place a couple of times after that to trade some tunes and we kept in touch on-and-off via e-mail and of course through the forums (actually, electronic media tended to have the effect of reducing our one-to-one contacts).
My thoughts go out to Cathy (both his parents had passed and he had no siblings or children of his own). He was without doubt a thoroughly decent bloke and is a tragic loss to the world of the music we love. |

That is sad.. I never knew him, never dealt with him.. but you couldn't avoid his name on the forums, or fail to respect his knowledge. I'm shocked. _________________ Good Afternoon. Here's the news. |

May he rest well. Bought some nice tunes at very reasonable prices from his Reggae Reggae Reggae lists over the years.
