I was just listening to this and the heavily overloaded vocals on I Love Jah makes the album painful to listen to. I have never had this on original vinyl since it has always been too expensive when I see it. Is this how the original LP sounds as well?

I have the CD, but not the vinyl - come the late 70s, I wasn't buying much Reggae at all, so I missed out on this one.

Does that mean you have the LP and the CD, Jason?

It's strange because the vocals are distorted in the same way throughout the whole album, so I was thinking something had happened along the way, like a bad copy being made of the master and that is all that is available. But the distortion is only on the vocals, you'd expect to hear the rest of the music affected as well. At the same time I just can't imagine it being mixed to sound like that. The vocals are also bathed in excessive reverb throughout, and that could be where the overload is happening, but again I don't see why they would have done the whole album like that on purpose. It would be interesting to hear from someone with the original LP.

I have had an enjoyable listen to this one, but not with any great level of volume, so I didn't notice distortion...I was also listening while doing something else, so my clothy ears weren't in critical mode.

It's only on the second part, the I Love Jah album, it is very noticable whenever Linval raises his voice, he has this almost "bellowing" (not the word I wanted, but the best word I could come up with since I am linguistically challenged being Swedish) thing he does a lot, which totally overloads something.

I realize I have some of the tracks on other CDs, like the Trojan Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks, so I'll try to compare what they sound like there.

According to a review on Amazon, some tracks are repeated on I Love Marijuana and don't have the distortion, so safe to rule that out I think.

I compared the tracks that appear on Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks and while they are crisper and cleaner sounding on the Trojan, which makes them an overall better listening experience (the Burning Sounds is quite muffled), the vocal distortion is there. Two songs are also on Makasound's Rocking Vibration, where again they sound clearer, but vocals distorted. So this is not a mastering problem (which it can't be anyway, since that would not just affect the vocals in this way) but something inherent in the source used for all these.

I know I have the old I Love Marijuana CD somewhere, but I can't find it, surprising if that sounds different.
