I've been looking at the track list of some of the cheap CASTLE PULSE compilations lately on Discogs and without doing extensive searches, I think a bunch of songs included on these have never surfaced on any Trojan compilations. Correct me if I'm wrong, but CASTLE PULSE is an either an a cheap label that belongs to Sanctuary or just a label that Trojan did licensed some of their catalogue. It's a bit weird that some of the songs were never included on official Trojan CD but on Castle Pulse. Unless Trojan decided that the sound quality wasn't good enough (going back to the Cactus/Creole post that I did three weeks ago)

I just made a search on previous posts... and this has been talked a few times. I see that Castle Pulse does belong to Sanctuary. But still I'm puzzle on why some of the songs never made it to official Trojan CDs while they keep repeating the same material. Trojan has a weird way of marketing their products.

Castle PIE also part of Sanctuary.

https://www.discogs.com/label/6783-Castle-Pie

One reason (at least) why SKA DIAP (on Castle PIE's excellent "Rocksteady Party" set from 2007) doesn't seem to appear on any Trojan album is because it's a Studio 1 production and so licensing specific tracks might have been an issue.

Rocksteady Party:
    1. Soul Ska - Ken Lazarus, The Dragonaires
    2. Run Come Dance - Glen Adams
    3. Socking Good Time - Sealmates
    4. We Are In The Mood - The Royals
    5. Get On Up - The Creations
    6. (I'm) Over You - Pat Perrin
    7. Ska Diap - Glen Brown
    8. Some Talk - Alton Ellis And The Flames
    9. Oh Babe (Sick And Tired) - The Techniques
    10. Papa Lick - Lester Sterling, The Dragonaires
    11. Right On Time - The Sensations
    12. The Revenge - Clancy Eccles
    13. Feel Good - Errol Dunkley
    14. Do It To Me Baby - Lloyd & The Groovers
    15. Love Is A Special Feeling - Toots & The Maytals
    16. I Want You So Bad - Ewan & Denver
    17. Lost Without You - Lloyd Charmers
    18. Give Me That Love - Nehemiah Reid
    19. Heartaches - Vic Taylor
    20. Soul Survivor - Val Bennett

I bought that one more or less 'pon release. Rather good isn't it? I'll investigate the others on Discogs.

Blimey - hadn't realised there were so many and across such varied music fields Shocked

Interesting that the 'Reggae Classics' set (a lot of same old, same old) has the Mohawks' 'Let It Be'. I wonder how Sanctuary got the rights to this?

If they did.

I remember someone (maybe LCH or maybe Gavin Hilzbrich, who was my original Snactuary contact) telling me that sometimes contractual arrangements could only be on a "best efforts" basis, given the often lack of solid or any paperwork.

Most of the sets, on Castle Pulse, are well worth, a punt. A shame, I've seen some go for silly prices, when they were very low priced, initially. At least they were, at RVA's Tower Records...... Smile

I reckon I paid well under a fiver at most for any of the Castle Comms., Castle PIE or Castle Pulse releases I bought.

Yes. They were bargain priced, to begin with. But, most were filled with a few gems, not available, elsewhere. Smile

Never knew about either of those. The `60s one looks interesting, although I can take or leave the `70s set.

Both are worth a punt, but the 60's, is head & shoulders, above the 70's. Great sound, IIRC. Wink

I can't believe those prices! I got mine for well under $7! Mad

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I love Discogs, it's very useful, but at the same time, it end up being very tricky. it leaves traces of how much one seller was willing to pay for an item and therefore the next sellers thinks they can ask the same price. Maybe for their 50th Anniversary, Trojan will make the 'Castle Pulse Box Set' (just kidding)

These are the reggae compilations that I found related to the Castle Pulse label (first thirteen). There are also a few artists compilations (John Holt, Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley and Inner Circle) and four Mod compilations that features a few reggae tracks that I decided not to list. The label was also operated under CASTLE COMMUNICATIONS, CASTLE MUSIC, CASTLE PIE and SEQUEL RECORDS and maybe even more names. The material issued prior to 2001 seems to have a tied with LAGOON • ESOLDUN, so maybe it’s only after Sanctuary acquired Trojan that the compilations started to include ‘exclusive’ songs issued on CD. If I knew there was that many, I would have never started that search. Now that it’s done, might as well share it Wink

Thanks for sharing MGR. I have a few of them, but most passed me by, and those that I do recognise I suspect did so on a presumption of same-old, same-old.
