Just stumbled across this website:

http://www.orbitonerecords.com/record-shop/

Some nice anecdotes and images of the shop, which I only ever saw after it had closed down. Also remember Sonny's Spindle Records shop at Pama's old Soundville address circa 1993.

Thanks, Marc - I enjoyed reading that.

I remember flogging over to Orbitone in the early 70s (late 1972 or early 1973, most probably) to see what I could pick up, but the place was fairly busy and I was on my own and felt too intimidated to go in, even though I was already a seasoned (if somewhat sporadic) visitor to Reggae shops and stalls in and around Shepherds Bush market...

I never ventured back there.

Looking at the photo and knowing where Orbitone records was (Station Road, Harlesden), I just had a look on Google maps - the building is still there (assuming I've got the right building - trusting to memory here) and is now a delicatessen (called Adega Brasil - post code NW10 4XA)

When I looked in through the window of the closed store probably ten years or more ago, I saw several cardboard boxes with their contents of Tackle and Orbitone labelled vinyl strewn across the floor. I did stick a note through the door offereing to take them off the owners' hands but didn't hear anything further. The shop must have been closed for many years as I remember the late Kenn Jones telling me he'd been in there just before it closed and had bought a cut price copy of Count Ossie's 'Man From Higher Heights' on Vista Sounds, and I would have been in contact with him around the late `90s.

Chris Prete also told me that it was always the last on his Harlesden/Willesden circuit, presumably because it was limited in the pre-release department.

A wonderful read! Clicked on the link, at the bottom, about Sonny, and read he's doing well, selling all natural products, now! Cool Cool
