Hi everyone,

I'm on the hunt for some big steppers tunes to beef up my 7" roots collection. Like rockers, flyers and other sub (or even sub-sub Wink) genres it's quite difficult to search specifically for steppers tunes due to it's subjectiveness and loose categorization (is a 4x4 bass drum all a roots tune needs to become 'steppers?').

Clearly Channel One in the mid 70's churned out some great steppers tracks backed by The Revolutionaries, but I'm just wondering if anyone on the forum has any favourite steppers tunes, new or old, that I could check out. I figured asking on here would help me to search for quality and not quantity.

Thanks in advance guys! Very Happy

The '4x4 bass drum' (four on the floor, based on the then popular Disco beat) is my definition of Steppers. I apply it to all Reggae though, not just Roots.

You might find some songs of interest here : https://www.mixcloud.com/anbessarootsreggae/play-it-inna-rockers-style/

and here : https://www.mixcloud.com/anbessarootsreggae/heavy-drops-earth-shaking-roots-tunes/

Actually, almost all my mixes feature some serious rockers/steppers songs, as I really love that style of drumming. So feel free to listen around... Very Happy

While it's easy to define "Steppers" because of this pattern, I am generally quite confused as to exactly what, musically speaking, defines "Rockers". Explanations are often vague and not seldom contradictory. These terms also often are used together, as "Rockers/Steppers", making it even harder to pin-point.

It's an evolution, on a theme, Rockers brought forth, in the early mid-70's. Rockers, tend to be more "rocking", while "Steppers", tend to space things out.

Some folk, don't even call it steppers. But rather, militant Rockers, as you can march to the "1-2-3-4", drum beats.

But, in a nutshell:

The bass drum style, for Rockers, is usually similar to that of, Steppers. The difference, is the way, the snare(aka the rimshot) is played.

I could be wrong, though. Especially, on certain forums, where the debates, require Kevlar helmets, and flak vests! Rolling Eyes
