OK – let’s see if we can put together a meaningful Top 100 single-artist and compilation album lists – if the likes of ourselves and our friends at the Blood & Fire, Pama and SNWMF forums also contribute, I’d say it would be a fairer reflection of real JA music fans’ views... :wik:

Please support this survey and make it count - aren't you as fed up as I am at the bland "Top 100" lists of this and that - especially the list that originally inpsired this survey:

http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_albums-reggae.html
(which is currently giving me "The page cannot be found" error Confused Confused )

1. Send either one or two Top 10 lists - one for single artist, one for compilations - single artists anthologies are fine (e.g. "Best Of..." or "Greatest Hits" albums) and can be included, as can recent single or various artist compilations.
2. Send these to my e-mail address - joe_lawrance@hotmail.com
3. One pair of lists per person.
4. Please get any friends who are not involved in a forum to send lists too.
5. Points to be awarded are 10 for 1st., 9 for 2nd., down to 1 point for 10th.
6. If it is clear in the e-mail that the list is not in order, I'll award 5.5 points for each selection (the exact average of adding 1 to 10)
7. If a reduced list is sent, (say only 6 albums) then full points will still be awarded – 10 down to 5 (in this example).
8. If an album mistakenly appears in the wrong list, I'll award the equivalent points from the same position in the other list, but not "shift" below albums points in the "wrong" list upwards - what else can I do?
9. This survey will run for a while at least until the end of May to give enough people a chance to vote.
10. I'll update this forum every few days - how many have voted - possibly list some front runners etc.
11. Since I am not an all-seeing-I, there'll doubtless be some albums I'll need guidance over whether they're re-releases (with a different name) or should be compilations etc.
12. If anyone wants to check the tables as time passes, drop me an e-mail and I'll forward the file (it'll be an Excel spreadsheet Wink )

I'll pass the eventual results on to Trojan for publication on their website - and elsewhere too, if anyone has any suggestions Smile

Two-fers are difficult to judge - unless the same one polls many votes. So for CDs like "Marcus Garvey"/"Garvey's Ghost" - I'd add the points to any that "Marcus Garvey" might have already got.

A very early good morning to you, Zap. You may already have established the ground rules for this poll in another communication (in which case my apologies) but I wonder if you could clarify the protocol on one point before I submit my entries. As a relative latecomer to reggae I find I have quite a few of my single artist collections in the form of career retrospective anthologies (eg the recent Trojan 2CD compilations of Slim Smith, Roy Shirley, Ken Parker, Rico etc). Are these anthologies admissible in the poll or are we restricted to albums that were released during the artist's active career (eg Bob Andy's "Song Book", Slim Smith's "Born to Love" etc)? By the same token, when it comes to various artists compilations I will obviously include "The harder they come" but am I allowed "Gaz Mayall's Top Ska Tunes" for example (or for that matter the recent huge multi-CD Lee Perry, Bunny Lee and Keith Hudson compilations)? Your adjudication on this matter would be appreciated before I finalise my entries for the two lists.

And top of the morning to you too, Chris Smile

Single-artist retrospectives are fine - e.g. Roy Shirley's, Rico's, Dennis Alcapone's and Slim Smith's anthologies. Although some of these types of albums contain (say) a duet or two - e.g. "Guns Don't Argue" contains several tracks by Dennis Alcapone & Lizzy - essentially, these are still single-artist sets, so that's where they will go.

Specific albums like "Phoenix City" credited as by the Ska-talietes and friends - I would reckon this as a single-artist set - the tracks are are all by the Ska-talites - whether before or after that name was used, or credited to individual members (with backing by some of the rest of "the boys"), or close associates who probably played on at least some of their sessions anyway.

"Foundation Ska" (original LP or CD) is also in essence a Ska-talites set - thus single-artist Wink

Albums like "Black & White" (the best of Greyhound), I'll treat as single-artist (though it's by derivatives too).

No reason at all why (say) "Gaz Mayall's Top Ska Tunes" shouldn't be included (if it's a favourite Exclamation ) as a various-artist compilation.

If it's a favourite, it's a favourite and will get votes accordingly, whether a single-artist album, or anthology, or various artist compilation of any type!

I'll update the guidelines straightaway - thanks for asking about this Wink

While I'm not exactly snowed under with responses - these have started to trickle in nicely.

Thanks to those who've sent so far - keep 'em coming Smile

As soon as I have enough data, I'll post more of an update.

In the meantime, I'll mention that one album has appeared in 3 people's single-artists lists, while 3 other albums have appeared twice.

While in the various artists section, 2 albums have been listed twice.

Zap - If speculation is allowed - My money is on Bob Andy's Studio One Songbook and Heart of the Congos getting 1st and 2nd position. Which order depends on how many vote from here compared to how many vote from over there I reckon.

It'll be interesting to see how closely the results tally with the rough guide to 100 greatest reggae CDs.

Interesting thoughts, Baldy - why not speculate?

Mind you, to predict 1st. and 2nd. places so early on is brave Wink

I have that "Rough Guide: 100 Essential Reggae CDs" booklet with me now, there are several entries in there that have turned up in peoples' lists already - but modesty prevents me saying which...plus I have the Top 100 spreadsheet elsewhere at home and can't be bothered to go and get it Confused

So far, I've had slightly more responses from "over there" than from "here"...but there's time enough.

I'm sure many are considering their choices...as Intensified notes we mustn't spoil the world for our "DNA derivatives" ...so we must consider our choices carefully Wink

I'm still working mine out (though I don't expect the Ska Revival Box Set to make it into the final list Shocked Rolling Eyes ) - I'll not be influenced by what anyone else votes for, but I have been given a few "nudges" by some selections Smile

...and I await your own and Intensified's lists with some anticipation Smile

...many others' selections too Wink Cool

So far I have received votes for 88 different single-artist albums and 89 compilations.

1 Single-artist album has appeared in 5 lists, while another has appeared in 4 lists.

1 various artist compilation has appeared in 5 lists, while 3 others have appeared in 4 lists.

I'm still way short of numbers though, so please let me have your votes when you can...

I haven't voted yet, either Confused

Best - Zap Wink

That's OK Ekki.

It's been quiet this week - I'm still way short of numbers - so I'm going to give a gentle reminder on the week-end - in here and BAF.

I had planned to finish by the end of May, but it may carry on longer.

I might have to publish early leaders to stimulate interest Wink

I look forward to your contribution Smile

Publishing some early stragglers might be even more effective Zap.

I am penitent. My top tens will be with you by the weekend.
