OK - we've seen a few opinions about Box Sets as a conceot ...the idea has run its course ...2 good, 1 bad CD ...iffy concepts ...and so on Wink

So let's have a topic and poll on it...

I love the idea of Box Sets, but the whole concept needs a shake up, in my opinion Surprised - I think while some of the ideas have been reasonable, some of the tracks in he compilation have been disappointing - the Jamaica Box Set being a recent case in point.

I also think that there is plenty of mileage for further volumes of some of the more generic titles - Ska, Rocksteady, Jamaican R&B, Dub, Skinhead and 12" - that area would raise the credibilty again...

So, let's have your thoughts...

In the meantime, I shall continue getting them as and when they are released Wink

I do love the box sets, they are what got me hooked on Trojan. I think the concept, packaging and value are all there.

That being said, I do think that a direction change is needed, either back to basics or toward something completely new. The last few have been weak and getting more so. I've been skipping more and more of the new releases.

I'm the bad tempered one who doesn't like them.

Without going over too much old ground I'll just say that the concepts are often pretty cheesy (Beatles/Jamaica/Sunshine/Chill Out/60's/70's).

The packaging is basically cheap and nasty and doesn't give the music the respect it deserves.

The tracklists though containing plenty of quality material are basically thrown together based on whatever the strange concept is. Therefore they often don't hang together particularly well. If I wanted a mix tape from a mate with a load of random tracks this is what I'd expect...but not from a quality re-issue company.

Now if someone does a Lesley Kong productions Box Set, or a Sonia Pottinger one I'll buy it - but Chill Out..? Give me a break!

Good point, Tim - the Producer Series is worth a volume 2 and while dedicating a whole Box set to one producer may be a bit too much (was the "Upsetter Box Set" a success or not, I wonder?), at least make it 1 CD per producer Wink ...or 2 producers on a Box Set Smile

While I know it's not in Trojan/Sanctuary's gift to be able to give us Studio One Box Sets, it's a musically mouth-watering prospect to wonder just how many volumes that concept might have run to - towards 100 maybe Question Wink Cool

Yeah, the concepts should be better thought out. Let's face it there's nothing "Limited Edition" about them - I still see x-yr old Box Sets pumped out at HMV etc. I will no longer buy a box set that has a quality control issue - ska revival, sunshine, jamaica etc. or simply is too repetitive trackwise.

Personally, I like the so-called 'rarities' offerings, such as revive, rare groove etc.

Just a few comments. Yes , the concepts are a little watered down. Don't have K Hudson yet, but looks SOLID. Now, a couple of weird mistakes: On the Zukie set, the song "O Lord" is a later re-recording, which is cool, but not identified as such.

The Delroy Wilson hit "Have Some Mercy" is not an original. It is a cover of Stax artist William Bell's "Forgot to be Your Lover" Besides that, it's an Upsetter riddim that was first voiced by Pat Francis a/k/a Jah Lloyd, though not a hit.

Not a hater, just fact-checking.

Greetings from Colly-for-nyah,

Sylford

Hi sylford - a seasonal welcome to the forum Smile - your musical opinions are worthwhile and valued - keep them coming.

We (myself included) in this forum often spot mistakes on not ony Trojan covers but also others - and we've had a whinge or two about them in here Confused Confused - there have been some recent comments - check some recent topics.

The Keith Hudson set is well-recommended - again, check other recent topics in this forum - all killer, no filler here! Very Happy Wink Cool

Must check "Have Some Mercy" again (and William Bell - that hasn't seen the light of day for a few years Wink )

I cant see why anyone would want to stop them even if they don't like 'em obviously not all are great ie skinhead etc, but others like the forthcoming roots & culture set are to me a must keep them coming.

Respect

Absolutely! I'm personally hoping for Skinhead V.2, 3, 4... Very Happy
But to each his own, I suppose.

Ska Rarities sounds promising, here's hoping they post a track listing soon.

But what about the Dancehall 69 issue then - wasn't that better than a boxset?
