Folks - for any of you interested in the Mento roots and influences of Jamaican music, I have a copy of the double CD "Dip & Fall Back" to give away:

Have go by answering these Qs:

1) Besides the title tune to this fine album, I have two other JA songs called "Dip & Fall Back" - by whom?

Clue: The years are 1968 and 1976

2) That old favourite "Shame And Scandal" appears on this CD (by King Bravo) - I have 4 other versions of this song - can you name 2 of them?

Clue: the years for these versions are 1957, 1965, 1966 and 1970

Usual rules - first 5 guesses are free - then up to 3 non-consecutive guesses per member.

Go on - give it a try Wink

OK, someone's got to start so here goes...

The only Dip & Fall Back songs I know are by The Pioneers (on the back of a Trojan original 7" of Long Shot or something like that) and by Hopeton Lewis. That second one I have on a 7" with a silver - or maybe grey - label. It's a completely different song, but 1976 sounds about right.

Shame and Scandal (in the family)? sounds harder. Doesn't it stretch back into the century before last! But at least you've given us some years as a clue, so Madness probably isn't one of them! That leaves my three remaining guesses as:

The Hiltonaires
The Wailers
Lord Jellicoe

And I'm expecting a (very) "close but no cigar" for that lot Zap! Cheers

Dubby

Justin Hinds & The Dominoes - Jezebel LP 1976
The Pioneers 1968

Shame and Scandal

Peter Tosh & The Skatalites- The Toughest LP 1970
Lord Tamano 1957
Lord Jellicoe - From The Dynamic Treasury Vol 1 LP 1965 0r 1967
The Blues Busters - Behold (The Anthology) LP 1967 or 1965

Not much piont as the others got in before me Sad The Wailers "shame And Scandal" that was just Peter Tosh imho ...

The Dangermen Sessions CD states Lord Tamamo was originally "shame And Scandal" but could be wrong

Good start, fellows- thanks Smile

Each of you has something right - I think overall Ekki is closest.

I only need two out of the 4 "Shame and Scandal" artists - please list only 2 artists.

Dubby - that isn't your 3 guesses over with - I mean you may have 3 non-consecutive tries at answering the questions. Thus 2 answers for question one and 2 for question two counts as one shot...Wink

2 more "free" tries...

I can't be arsed to try and second guess whatever it is we've been asked to try and figure out. I shall buy this release simply because I love mento and consider it a sadly overlooked area of Jamaican music.

The good news for me is that the next release from Pressure Sounds is also a mento compilation, and fortunately there seems to be very little overlap between these and any of the other collections I have.

Cracked it!

Well done, Ekki!

I have "Dip & Fall Back" as the B side of the Pioneers' "Long Shot" (UK Amalgamated AMG814 - 1968) and by Justin Hinds & the Dominoes on the Jack Ruby-produced "Jezebel" LP (UK Island ILPS9416 - 1976)

I have "Shame & Scandal" not only by the Hiltonaires on the "Big Bamboo" re-release CD (JA Sonic Sounds SONCD.0086 - 1996) and the Buesbusters on both the budget-priced "It's Ska Time" CD (UK Charly - CDCD1220 - 1994) and "Great Sound Of Jamaica" 3-CD cheapie (UK Goldies - GLD25388 - 2000)...but also by Horace Faith (UK A&M single - AMS817 - 1970) and by the W.I.R.L. All Star Steel Band on the recent "Sand & Steel - Classic Sound Of JA Steel Drums" 2-CD compilation (UK Trojan - TJBDD280 - 2005)

Thanks for trying you guys - don't worry, I have Dennis Brown, Lee Perry/African Brothers and Trojan Selecta 2 give aways up for grabs soon.

I'll let you know when I've posted this Ekki Wink
