Flirtations - NOTHING BUT A HEARTACHE

Cool Cool Cool

Remembered this from when it came out in 1968 - never bought it - forgot about it - heard it on Peter Young's Soul Cellar show on Smooth FM a couple of years ago - but couldn't find it Confused

Then found it on a Deram CD, "The Northern Soul Scene" a bit over a year ago.

...and this CD only cost me a quid Cool Cool Exclamation Exclamation

This might be a silly question, but what categorizes the northern soul sound? And what's the story behind it?

I believe the term is in honour of the 'Northern' England soul scene (did Dave Godin coin it as well?) Even though I believe there is no real classification of the sound beyond the ability to dance to it, it does seem to feature more polished, produced sounds associated with soul labels North of the Mason-Dixon line, Detroit, New York - like Tamla Motown etc. Not really my general personal taste - select classics excepted of course.

To confuse things, Southern Soul is a description of the more downbeat and grittier soul sounds and ballads associated with Southern labels and studios.

Northern soul is a term coined in 1971 by Dave Godin to describe uptempo soul with a dance beat that were popular amongst clubbers in the North of England.

A lot of the records are pale imitations of the Motown sound but many are also bonafide great records(Frankie Beverley's "Because Of My Heart" being my own top tune of the moment). Unfortunately the soul scene goes hand in hand with the use of drugs and many people enjoy records with breakneck speed tempos and very little soulfulness to them at all. True soul fans will also enjoy the slower grittier records from the Southern States of the USA on labels such as Stax, Hi, Goldwax and SS7.

Respect

Gordon

Here's what I wrote in Gordy's:

"Dave Godin "devised" the term to describe the kind of music that Northerners who visited his London Soul City shop typically used to favour"

Hi Roots and Braces

I got this for Xmas a few years ago and I thought it was a great intro to northern soul music and the scene if you're interested

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Soul-Function-Northern-Story-DVD/dp/B0002Y9U2I/sr=8-1/qid=1164386463/ref=pd_ka_1/026-9063496-7854069?ie=UTF8&s=music

It features a CD and DVD with the latter including a short movie that's not to be taken too seriously and a documentary with interviews from folk who were "there at the time". Well worth the 14 odd quid IMO and good education for the uninitiated Wink

For today, one of my fav's. Make Me Yours by Bettye Swann
Also done by Rocksteady high priestess Phyllis Dillon
First cut on the latest Podcast offering.
'Course, I'm American so I can't be bothered to fuss with North versus South
but there are some good cuts on the show

OK- so for today- How bout that Pat Powdrill "Do It". That damn thing is so infectious it stays in my head all day, causes me to leap from the car and dance in traffic, and re-affirms the fact that I am a total ass for my wife- I think that ought to be todays tune
