Universal are thinking of starting a new specialist imprint and are talking about producing limited runs of old albums from the catalogue on high quality vinyl with original artwork faithfully reproduced (as has been done with the CD range)

So what do you guys think?

We need your votes - if only the usual 30 or so vote, then I guess it's seen as not representative and nothing may happen...

...which might be why nothing much came out of the last set of votes - that was in early 2008, wasn't it? - but it might also have been that Universal hadn't really sorted themselves out when it came to what the Trojan catalogue could offer, having only had the catalogue for several months.

Plus, LCH probably hadn't got his feet under the table at that stage.

Also, how about suggestions for some original JA albums, for which Universal might have licensing rights?

Had a quick shufti at Tapirs, and how about these for starters?

ISLAND:

Lyn Taitt & The Jets - Sounds Rock Steady
Various - Put It On Rock Steady
Bunny Lee All Stars - Leaping With Mr Lee
Granville Williams Orchestra - Hi-Life

TROJAN:

Brother Dan All Stars - Lets Catch The Beat
Kingstonians - Sufferer
Upsetters - The Good, Bad & The Upsetters
Various - Mudies Mood
Jo Jo Bennett - Groovy Joe
Various - Queen Of The World
Delano Stewart - Stay A Little Bit Longer

Generally, I'd say they should release classic LP's for which the originals are too expensive for most peoples's pockets. Pointless putting out (eg) Tighten Up Vol 2, when you can pick up the original for the same price... (IMHO). Cool

Thanks for the ideas, Pete.

Given that many tunes from many "original" albums will have found their way onto other CD compilations, it can be difficult to pick likely candidates.

A couple of thoughts...

ILP 928 Derrick Harriot - The Best Of Derrick Harriott
Tracks: What Can I Do / I Care / I'm Only Human / Have Faith In Me / My Three Loves / Together // Do The Jerk / I Won't Cry / Sugar Dandy / Mama Didn't Lie / Don't Treat Me Bad / Oh Leona
1965

ILP 957 Hopeton Lewis - Take It Easy - Rock Steady With Hopeton Lewis
Tracks: Take It Easy / Sound And Pressure / A De Pon Dem / Why Must I Cry / Let The Little Girl Dance // Rock Steady / Cool Collie / Music Got Soul / Hardships Of Life / This Poor Boy
Produced by Richard Khouri
1967

ILP 972 Various - The Sounds Of Sunny Burke
Tracks: The Magnificent Seven / Water Melon Man / Patricia / All Over The Place / Mangoose / Jingle Bells / Isle Of Capri / Lindstead Market / Girl I've Got A Date / Tel Aviv / Lucy / White Christmas

1967

Some excellent tunes on here, but is it worth a reissue?

TRLD 403 Various Artists - Rebel Music - An Anthology Of Reggae Music
Tracks: You Don't Know (Bob Andy) / The Loser (Derrick Harriott) / High-School Dance (Freddie McKay) / The Russians Are Coming (Val Bennett) / Tonight (Keith & Tex) / Ain't That Loving You (U.Roy) / Them A Fe Get A Beatin' (Peter Tosh) // God Helps The Man (Leroy Smart) / Hypocrite (The Heptones) / S. 90 Skank (Big Youth) / Hard Fighter (Little Roy) / 2 Wedden Skank (Glenn Brown) / Anywhere But Nowhere (K.C. White) / Beat Down Babylon (Junior Byles) // Concentration (Dennis Brown) / Screaming Target (Big Youth) / Slaving (Lloyd Parks) / You Are My Angel (Horace Andy) / Melody Maker (Keith Hudson) / Money In My Pocket (Dennis Brown) / Maga Dog (Peter Tosh) // Cheater (Dennis Brown) / Blackman Time (I.Roy) / Satan Side (Horace Andy & Earl Flute) / Give Praises (Big Youth) / Rock Away (Gregory Isaacs) / Saturday Night Special (Michael Dyke) / Cool Rasta (Heptones)
1979

Have to admit that is pretty much how i'd see it with 2 addtions
Definatly up for a copy of
Various - Here Comes The Duke &
Derrick Morgan - Derrick In London

but after Zaps Island hint i had a good look through all the Island stuff
i'm interested in all 6 of these if they are going to re-issue as they were originally

ILP 930 Various - Ska At The Jamaica Playboy Club
ILP 948 Various - Club Ska '67
ILP 956 Various - Club Ska '67 Vol. 2 ??
ILP 958 Various - Duke Reid's Rock Steady (had a Trojan label)
ILP 965 Various - Club Rock Steady '68
ILP 990 Derrick Morgan And His Friends

in 1980 they (Island) did a great set of re-issues
which has passed me by Rolling Eyes
if they were CDs then ignore me Smile
but if they were vinyl ???
I'll have Any or all of the following :-

IRSP 1 (200.351) Various - One Big Happy Family
IRSP 2 (200 826 / MLSP 9524) Various - Intensified! - Original Ska 1962-67
IRSP 3 (201 662 / MLSP 9597) Various - More Intensified Vol. 2 - Original Ska 1963-67
IRSP 4 (201 663-250 / MLSP 9598 / MLPS 1008) Various - Club Ska '67
IRSP 7 Various - Catch This Beat - The Rock Steady Years 66/68
IRSP 12 (203 532-250 / MLSP 9632) Various - The King Kong Compilation
IRSP 13 (203 193-241 / MLPS 9635) The Melodians - Sweet Sensation
