Received an email about this from LC-H last week, but wasn't sure until this evening how much I could advertis.

I'm sure the prospect of TOTAS (of which I wasn't a member first time around - in those days, I didn't like joining things for some reason) will be intersting, exciting, even important to some, while to others, it will be meaningless and seem pointless.

I've no idea on how or what, but Laurence did say that it's likely to re-birth around the end of August and:

...and...

A few ideas have been mooted, including rewarding members with official Trojan merchandise (T-shirts, etc.) in return for owning current/existing Trojan product. Another proposal was in return for signing up, members would receive exclusive e-newsletters and pre-sale windows to buy Trojan products before any official announcement

Whatever one thinks (musically) of the releases so far, this part has to be a good idea Exclamation

Not sure what an "exclusive" newsletter might contain.

Laurence Cane-Honeysett wrote:
Reaction to these would be appreciated, as well as thoughts on other benefits members might receive.

So any thoughts on what would be suitable will be more than welcome - for example metal badges and sew-on badges might be good ideas from the nostalgia point of view.

Some kind of discount (and free postage on the singles was obvious to me) maybe?

Your thoughts are welcomed and appreciated.

Sounds good to me (there will doubtless be the obvious moaners!)... I didn't join back in the day for the same reason as you Joe... Rolling Eyes

...it wasn't the "done thing" - to this day, I don't belong to any clubs (i.e. CIUs etc.), not only because of the "rules" and the "you can't sit there, that's been Charlie's seat for 40 years - he'll be in in a bit" syndrome, but also the beer, although cheap, is usually crap.

Good connection, Brian - and maybe one Universal should consider!

Join TOTAS! Drink lots of decent beer!

I don't have a Tesco loyalty card, on the other hand, I am currently making good use of my BAmiles. If membership is free I suppose there'd be no harm in joining a Trojan loyalty card scheme.

I will be interested to see what 'rewards' are offered, though having only bought the first 10 singles (is it me or is the colour hopelessly wrong on the latest one?) during Universal's tenure I doubt it will be worth my while.

Not really interested in badges, be they cloth or metal. The mighty Pressure Sounds however always include stickers, postcards, magnets (again, not that I'm really interested), and last week they used a 'Same Song' cover as packaging in which was a rolled up Federal Records poster - which was nice. No club, no fuss.

T.(?) O.(?) Trojan Appreciation Society. What does the T.O. stand for?

TO = The Official if I remember correctly, IP.

Yes, the colour isn't that bright on the Big Shot single.

I like the stickers idea (I've had a few bunged in with each of the - admitedly only 3 or 4 - Pressure Sounds orders I've placed), though I've never seen a PS magnet.

Special "membership" sleeves (other than plain white ones) wouldn't be expensive.

The fridge magnet was issued to promote Prince Far I's 'Psalms For I' album. I popped it onto a radiato,r mommentarily forgetting my wife likes the central heating cranked up to about double that of the surface of the sun whereupon said magnet welded itself to the radiator and has resisted all subsequent attempts to shift it!

They send a lot of Dubstore bits & pieces whenever I order that stuff from them. The other day they also enclosed a piece of balsa with Pressure Sounds burnt/branded onto it, which looks quite good - dunno what I'm going to do with it though.

As for Trojan; sensibly priced singles would be a good start, I'm not spending another tenner on a UK single, no matter how thick the vinyl. Different sleeves for TOTAS product might be an idea. I can't see it lasting though, these types of organisations normally evolve independently through like-minded collectors or enthusiasts coming together if it hasn't happened yet it's probably because the desire for it is lacking. Up to a point an officially sanctioned & created club is always going to feel like a marketing and promotion excercise. It will be interesting to see what Universal propose to overcome this.

i was actualyy a member, it was run by a lady called rose if my memory serves me well.
we used to get copies of the reggae charts reviews and any interesting news, normally if a trojan records was getting record plays on radio one. which was pretty rare pre Bob Marley..Exodus.
they often gave news of upcoming gigs. i went to a saddlers wells reggae concert and an alnighter at Hammersmith palais.plus the sundown at Edmonton.which had the wailers on, though as a young teen i was probaly to drunk by the end of the evening.
Any way i guess in the age of the internet people do not realise just how hard it was to find out things in them days, reggae wise as the music press generally dismissed it until the punk days when it seemed more fashionable.
I am sure this will be a good thing just hope it does well in an age when people always want something for nothing music wise

...and (of course) "they" (i.e. me, you and almost everyone else) also want it immediately...

immediately I admit to , well give or take a day to allow for post, but i dont mind paying for good music esspecaily at the trojan and the Vp 17north parade prices, well its a shame the 7^ are not a little cheapers specaily as i got stung for postage on the last release, but i am sure they will always hold their monetary value.
talking of Vp i see they are releasing Java java java and This Is Augustus Pablo on cd though the latter was released on heartbeat albeit my copy from them was a cdr which is another pet hate of mine, record companies putting things out on cdr but not informing the buying public.

A better idea than specialist "TOTAS" sleeves is something like the Bitty McLean gatefold sleeve (Idea such presentation could be exclusive to TOTAS members).

Plus the record and CD together cost only 6 + 1.60 P&P from Dub Vendor...

I was also a member Nick - my membership card shows an expiry date of January 1974. And well remembered - it was Helen and Rose at 11 Manor Close, Kingsbury. Apparently, after they stopped running the T.A.S a chap called Eric who ran something like the West Indian Music Appreciation Society had a bash at resurrecting it but it floundered when Trojan/B&C hit the skids.
